Car reportedly owned by Kanye West stolen, wrecked

HONOLULU – Police are trying to determine who stole a pricey sports car that reportedly belonged to rapper Kanye West, and crashed it into a Honolulu house.

Honolulu police said Tuesday a black Porsche Panamera rammed into the unoccupied house near Waikiki early Saturday, creating a large hole in the side of the garage and crumpling the sedan.

Witnesses reported seeing two men walk away from the car after the crash, and police are still trying to identify the suspects. No arrests have been made.

KITV and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported the car is registered to West, who had been in Hawaii while recording a new album.

Police spokeswoman Michelle Yu wouldn't confirm who owns the car, and West's agent didn't immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

Judge says Lohan violated terms of her bail

Lindsay Lohan AP – FILE - In this June 6, 2010 file photo, Lindsay Lohan arrives at the MTV Movie Awards in Universal City, …

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Lindsay Lohan's alcohol-monitoring bracelet got her in trouble Tuesday with a judge who doubled the actress' bail to $200,000.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel determined Lohan violated the terms of her release after a closed-door meeting with the actress' attorney and a prosecutor. Revel did not detail the violation, but said her decision was made after receiving "results" issued by a court-ordered alcohol monitor.

District Attorney's spokeswoman Shiara Davila-Morales said it was an "alcohol-related violation," but did not have further details.

A source familiar with Lohan's case told The Associated Press that the violation was reported after the "Mean Girls" star appeared at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night.

Lohan was not present in court Tuesday, but several denials of wrongdoing were posted on the actress' Twitter account shortly before and after the hastily called hearing.

Lohan's $200,000 bail was posted less than two hours after the hearing, a move that quashed a bench warrant issued for the actress' arrest by the judge.

Lohan's attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, issued a statement Tuesday, saying the device indicated the "presence of a small amount of alcohol" on Sunday night.

"Having just received the report, I am not in a position to speak to its accuracy or validity, however Ms. Lohan maintains that she has been in complete compliance with all of the terms of her probation and her bail," Chapman Holley said in a statement.

Lohan has been required to wear the device since May, when she missed a court hearing. Lohan is due back in court on July 6, when Revel will decide whether Lohan has violated her probation.

Lohan, 23, is facing jail time if the judge determines she has failed to comply with the terms of her probation.

The actress has received multiple chances and admonishments from the court, which extended her probation in October by a year after Lohan struggled to complete the terms in time.

At the May hearing, Revel set Lohan's bail at $100,000, which she revoked on Tuesday. The judge also issued a bench warrant for Lohan's arrest, but that may be quashed if the actress is able to post the new bail amount.

David Perez, a bail bondsman, posted Lohan's $100,000 bail last month and said he was not concerned with posting the additional sum ordered Tuesday.

Authorities said they did not have additional details on what Lohan's alcohol-monitor registered in order to be found in violation.

The bracelet is designed to test the skin for alcohol every half hour by sampling a person's perspiration. There are also sensors that check for tampering.

Lohan appeared at the MTV awards show on Sunday. She also attended at least one of the show's after-parties.

She covered up the ankle monitor on the show's red carpet by wearing long pants.

The actress has been on probation since August 2007 after pleading guilty to misdemeanor drug charges and no contest to three driving charges.

Despite spending 84 minutes in jail and performing mandatory service at the county morgue, Lohan has repeatedly struggled with the terms of her sentence. In October, a judge extended her probation for another year but Meyers warned the actress she was facing jail time if she violated her probation.

The extension was the third time Lohan escaped punishment after her alcohol-education program notified the court the actress had violated its rules. Two of the instances were described as misunderstandings; the third was chalked up to a busy work schedule.

Chapman Holley said Lohan missed the hearing last month because her passport had been stolen while the actress was at the Cannes Film Festival.

Trial begins for accused Shawn Johnson stalker

Shawn Johnson AP – FILE - In this Aug. 15, 2009 file photo, former olympian and Dancing With The Stars celebrity Shawn Johnson …

LOS ANGELES – A man accused of stalking Shawn Johnson harbored a dangerous obsession to marry the Olympic gold-medalist, a prosecutor claimed Tuesday.

Robert O'Ryan, 36, sat quietly as prosecutor Wendy Segall described how he drove from Jacksonville, Fla., to Los Angeles in March 2009 in an attempt to meet Johnson.

At one point in her opening statements in O'Ryan's criminal trial, Segall produced the numerous weapons — a handgun, shotgun, knife and club — found in his car, which was searched after he jumped a fence at the studios where Johnson was performing on the reality competition "Dancing with the Stars."

The prosecutor said the guns were loaded at the time of O'Ryan's arrest last March. Segall said he also had duct tape, plastic ties and a bulletproof vest in the car.

O'Ryan has pleaded not guilty to felony stalking and burglary charges and two misdemeanor counts of carrying a concealed weapon. If convicted, he faces nearly four years in prison for the felonies and two years in jail for the misdemeanors.

On Monday, O'Ryan entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. If a judge rules he is insane, O'Ryan could be sent to a state mental hospital.

His attorney, Judith Greenberg, said in her opening remarks that O'Ryan posed no threat to Johnson. She said O'Ryan was a well-educated man who developed a mental illness years ago and had a delusional fascination with the gymnast.

Greenberg said her client didn't try to contact Johnson until he went to the "Dancing with the Stars" set. She also said he thought he needed to protect Johnson, not harm her.

"He also came because the delusions and the voices told him Shawn Johnson was in danger and he needed to protect her," Greenberg said. "He was so impelled and compelled to come here because of the certainty of his beliefs."

Johnson won a gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Games. She was not present in court but is expected to testify at the trial, which is expected to last all week. O'Ryan has waived his right to a jury trial, so his fate will be decided solely by a judge.

The first round of witnesses Tuesday included studio employees and security workers who encountered O'Ryan the day he went to try to meet Johnson.

An Alabama police officer, Christopher Crisler, also testified about a traffic stop days earlier in which O'Ryan laid out his plan to try to meet the gymnast and marry her. The stop was videotaped by the patrol car's dashcam and showed in court.

When the officer asked skeptically about O'Ryan trying to marry someone he's never met, the former engineer replied that his plan was to try to spend as much time with her as possible.

"I know it's kind of a little bit crazy," O'Ryan says at one point during the traffic stop.

Chris Brown denied entry to Britain for tour

LONDON (Reuters) – R&B singer Chris Brown has postponed his tour to Britain after being denied a visa to enter the country in a decision linked to his sentence for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna 16 months ago.

The 21-year-old, whose hits include "Run It!" and "Kiss Kiss," was sentenced in August 2009 to five years probation, ordered to perform 180 days of community service and attend domestic abuse counseling.

The tour was due to have started in Glasgow, Scotland, on Wednesday, followed by gigs in Birmingham, Manchester and London on Thursday, Friday and Sunday respectively.

It was postponed "due to unforeseen circumstances," according to the website promoting the tour. Fans were advised to hold on to their tickets with the possibility of the dates being re-arranged.

Britain's Home Office said: "We reserve the right to refuse entry to the UK to anyone guilty of a serious criminal offence. Public safety is one of our primary concerns. Each application to enter the UK is considered on its individual merits."

Brown has the right to appeal.

Miley Cyrus draws crowd during first performance in Spain

ARGANDA DEL REY, Spain (AFP) – US teen idol Miley Cyrus performed her first concert in Spain before 36,000 people on Sunday during the third day of the Rock in Rio Madrid music festival, organisers said.

Wearing a black leotard and heels, the 17-year-old sang "Can't be tamed", "The climb" and "When I look at you", which is part of the soundtrack of her latest film "The Last Song" that premiered in Spain last month.

The crowd consisted mainly of adults and young children, mostly girls. Many climbed on the shoulders of their parents to get a better view of the stage.

While Cyrus has never performed in Spain before, she enjoys a huge following in the country due to the popularity of her television series "Hannah Montana".

As a condition for playing at the festival held at Arganda del Rey located some 20 kilometres (12 miles) southeast of Madrid, she will not perform any other concert in Spain this year.

Her performance headlined a day dedicated to the family that featured two other youth-oriented acts -- British pop band McFly and Scottish singer Amy Macdonald.

"I think adding Miley Cyrus to the event added a whole new dimension to Rock in Rio and attracted a different kind of audience," Gary Bongiovonni, the president of Pollstar, a California-based company that provides worldwide concert tour information at its web site, told AFP.

Among the other artists lined up to perform at the festival, one of the world's biggest which wraps up on June 14, are heavy metal veterans Metallica, US rockers Bon Jovi and Colombian pop star Shakira.

Rock in Rio was first held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in January 1985.

This is the second Rock in Rio Madrid. The first in 2008 was attended by 290,000 music fans. Organisers expect the total audience of this edition to reach 320,000 people.

Sandra Bullock to be honored at MTV Movie Awards

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – All eyes at the MTV Movie Awards will be on Sandra Bullock when she accepts the MTV Generation Award in her first televised appearance since she split with unfaithful husband Jesse James earlier this year.

"Parks and Recreation" star Aziz Ansari is hosting Sunday night's fan-favorite award ceremony, to be broadcast live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, Calif. The 27-year-old actor and comedian says he will also perform a musical number "in the style of my R&B hero, R. Kelly."

The show will feature other performances by Katy Perry, Snoop Dogg and Christina Aguilera, and footage from the forthcoming "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." Presenters include Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz and Robert Pattinson.

Bullock made a surprise appearance Saturday night at Spike TV's "Guys Choice" event in Culver City, Calif., but that show won't be broadcast until June 20. She received a standing ovation when she accepted the "Troops Choice" Award for Entertainer of The Year, from presenter Robert Downey, Jr. The award was voted on by members of the military.

The 45-year-old actress has kept a low profile since James' affair became public shortly after she won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in "The Blind Side" on March 7.

Prosecutor: Agreement reached in Sheen case

Charlie Sheen AP – FILE - This Jan. 28, 2009 file photo shows Charlie Sheen in Los Angeles. Sheen has reached an agreement …

ASPEN, Colo. – Charlie Sheen has reached an agreement with authorities in Colorado over domestic violence allegations involving his wife, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

The agreement was confirmed by Chief Deputy District Attorney Arnold Mordkin, who declined to disclose details.

Brooke Mueller Sheen's lawyer, Yale Galanter, also confirmed a plea agreement but refused to say what the terms were because "a deal is not a deal until the judge approves it."

"There has definitely been a deal reached," said Galanter. "Brooke is totally satisfied with the deal but if she had her druthers, the case would have been dismissed."

Sheen pleaded not guilty to menacing, criminal mischief and assault charges stemming from an argument with his wife on Christmas Day at an Aspen home where they were on vacation. The most serious charge is menacing, a felony that carries a maximum three-year prison sentence.

Sheen's attorney Richard Cummins did not immediately return phone messages seeking comment.

Sheen is scheduled to be in court Monday for a disposition hearing. His trial had been scheduled for July 21.

Cummins had sought to throw out statements that the "Two and a Half Men" actor made to police investigating the case. He argued that an officer questioned Sheen in the basement of a house without advising him of his right to remain silent.

Charlie Sheen denied threatening or hitting his wife but told police that he broke two pairs of her eyeglasses in front of her.

A police officer's arrest affidavit quoted Brooke Sheen as saying the actor pinned her on a bed while holding a knife to her throat and making a threat. In an audio recording of a 911 call, a woman who identifies herself as Brooke tells the dispatcher, "I thought I was gonna die for one hour."

Since the incident occurred at Christmas, both Sheens have completed alcohol rehab programs and Galanter said, "They have been sober for months and months. "

As for the status of the Sheen marriage, Galanter said, "They're working at it."

US library honors Paul McCartney for pop music

Paul McCartney AP – Singer Paul McCartney speaks to the media about his being awarded the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize …

WASHINGTON – When it comes to popular music, it doesn't get much bigger than the tunes Paul McCartney has written and sung over the past five decades with the Beatles and on his own.

McCartney, who has been knighted by the queen of England, is being honored with Washington's highest award for pop music this week by the Library of Congress. The Gershwin Prize for Popular Song is named for the U.S. songwriting brothers George and Ira Gershwin, whose collections are housed at the library.

McCartney has "made an impact far beyond music through his humanitarianism and activism around the world, which are emblematic of the spirit of the Gershwin Prize," Librarian of Congress James Billington said Tuesday.

The 67-year-old McCartney said he's "slightly nervous" about performing about three feet in front of President Barack Obama in the East Room at the White House on Wednesday, when he will be presented the award.

"For an English kid growing up in Liverpool, the White House — that's pretty special," he said Tuesday.

"He's a great guy," McCartney said of Obama, "so lay off him."

The former Beatle says it's very special to win the Gershwin Prize because he grew up listening to music by the Gershwin brothers.

Faced with the Washington press corps, McCartney was quizzed on his inspiration for songwriting, his opinion on whether performers should earn royalties for when their work is played on the radio (he thinks they should) and even got a few autograph requests.

This is McCartney's first major lifetime achievement award from the U.S. government. He was slated to win a Kennedy Center Honor, the nation's top prize for performing artists, in 2002, but backed out because of a scheduling conflict. In 1990, McCartney won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Jonas Brothers, Faith Hill, Stevie Wonder and Jerry Seinfeld are part of an all-star lineup that will honor McCartney. The concert will be televised July 28 nationwide on PBS.

Performers also will include White Stripes singer and guitarist Jack White, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, singers Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello and others.

McCartney was knighted as Sir Paul in 1997 for his service to music. Thirty years earlier, he and the rest of the Fab Four were dubbed Members of the Order of the British Empire, a step below knighthood and an honor that drew some protests.

The one-time teen idol has since made his name as an environmentalist and animal rights supporter.

His concerts, of course, still draw huge crowds. In 2008, McCartney drew hundreds of thousands in Ukraine, New York City, Quebec City, Canada and his native Liverpool, England. He also made his first visit to Israel.

Wonder and Paul Simon previously won the Gershwin prize.

Dunst reprises her role as witness in NYC trial

NEW YORK – It was witness stand, the sequel, for Kirsten Dunst.

The "Spider-Man" star reprised her role Tuesday as a star witness against a mechanic being tried — for the second time — on charges of helping steal her designer purse from a Manhattan hotel suite during a 2007 movie shoot.

Wearing a demure, loose black dress and a sometimes weary expression, the actress gave jurors a clipped, subdued account of returning from filming to find her $2,000 Balenciaga handbag gone from a SoHo Grand Hotel penthouse suite.

Her assistant's bag and co-star Simon Pegg's cell phone and other possessions also were taken from the room, which was being used as an actors' lounge while the 2008 comedy "How to Lose Friends & Alienate People" was shot downstairs.

"All our belongings were gone. I thought that my assistant had taken them and put them somewhere else, but everything was gone," Dunst testified. Inside the bag were her wallet, credit and other cards, vintage Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses and $2,000 in cash, she said.

Besides calling hotel security staffers and police, "We even went outside to look for our bags, like maybe it was dumped in a Dumpster," she added.

The mechanic, James Jimenez, was convicted last fall of trespassing, but jurors deadlocked on a more serious burglary charge. He's being retried on that charge. Defense lawyer Robert Parker said Jimenez, 36, just tagged along with a co-defendant he believed had permission to be there.

Dunst, 28, played her part in the real-life court drama Tuesday in a noticeably more somber, matter-of-fact manner than she did at Jimenez' first trial in September, when she greeted judge and jurors with a chipper "Hi!"

She rebuffed Parker's suggestion of a party atmosphere surrounding the overnight shoot on Aug. 8 and Aug. 9, 2007, which concluded her filming obligations for the movie.

Parker has noted that co-defendant Jarrod Beinerman has a drug history, including pleading guilty in the 1990s to playing a part in a drug-dealing ring. Beinerman wasn't charged with any drug-related offenses in the SoHo Grand episode; he pleaded guilty in 2008 to attempted burglary and was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison. His lawyer, Mitchell Elman, declined to comment Tuesday on the Jimenez case.

Dunst's assistant, Liat Baruch, testified last week that she had a small amount of marijuana in her own bag and was planning to smoke it after the shoot. But she and Dunst testified that Dunst knew nothing of that, and Dunst said she doesn't smoke the drug.

"We wrapped at 5:30 in the morning and found our bags were stolen, so we went home," having celebrated with nothing more decadent than a takeout dinner order from the posh sushi restaurant Nobu, the actress said.

Her bag, wallet and cards were eventually returned to her manager's office, but she never recovered the cash and sunglasses, she said.

Carly Simon brews fresh lawsuit against Starbucks

Carly Simon arrives at the Museum of Television & Radio's annual gala in New York Reuters – Carly Simon arrives at the Museum of Television & Radio's annual gala in New York, February 8, 2007. …

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Carly Simon isn't finished kicking up a storm over Starbucks' decision to get out of the music business just five days before her previous album was scheduled to be released in its stores.

The singer originally sued the coffee retailer in October, claiming that its Hear Music venture delivered a marketing plan to Simon that confirmed that her 2008 album, "This Kind of Love," would be extensively marketed and distributed at Starbucks locations in the United States and in Canada. But Simon said Starbucks decided to withdraw from Hear Music with no prior notice to her.

In April, a Los Angeles District Court judge tossed on summary judgment Simon's lawsuit, saying she failed to show how Starbucks made fraudulent misrepresentations or concealed facts that misled her. However, the judge gave Simon the opportunity to amend her complaint.

Simon is represented by star litigator David Boies, who has never been known to back down from a fight. So Simon filed an amended lawsuit in late April. Starbucks filed its response two weeks ago, and a ruling is expected soon on whether to proceed further in the case.

The original lawsuit hung on the question over what obligations Starbucks owed Simon. The singer didn't have any direct contractual relationship with the coffee chain. Instead, her deal was with Hear Music, a separate operating entity that provided Starbucks, its parent company, with albums to distribute in its stores. The singer previously argued that one could connect the dots easy enough such that the parent company had a duty to disclose material decision-making that would have a big effect on the marketing and sales of her album.

The judge didn't buy it.

Now in the amended complaint, Simon goes back to basics. Instead of arguing disclosure obligations, she tries to show misrepresentations on behalf of Starbucks with slightly more specifics. She alleges that Alan Mintz, vp of content development at Starbucks, told her in a series of phone calls and in person that if she signed with Hear Music, Starbucks would aggressively promote and distribute her albums. She points to her contract with Hear that represented that the company was co-owned by Starbucks. And she trots out the marketing plan for her album that confirmed her album's placement in Starbucks stores.

In its response, Starbucks says the singer still can't show any obligation on behalf of Starbucks, arguing that laws only allow a "corporate veil" to be pierced under extraordinary circumstances. Perhaps just as damaging to Simon's claims, Starbucks cites the singer's contract, negotiated at arm's-length by one a respected music lawyer, which specifically waived the right to hold Starbucks liable for alleged shortcomings of Hear Music. Finally, Starbucks says that even if the company was shown to have an obligation, Simon hasn't even attempted to show these representations were false at the time and made with the intent to deceive.

Queen Elizabeth to miss Commonwealth Games

LONDON (AFP) – Queen Elizabeth II will not attend the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October, Buckingham Palace confirmed Sunday -- the first time she has missed the event in decades.

Prince Charles, her eldest son and the heir to the throne, will represent the 84-year-old Head of the Commonwealth instead at the October 3-14 Games.

"It is correct to say that the Queen will not be attending the Commonwealth Games this year," a palace spokesman said.

"The volume of Her Majesty's engagements, coupled with other overseas commitments, means she will not be able to attend."

The Commonwealth Games are held every four years.

Delhi 2010, the biggest multi-sport event to be staged in India since the Asian Games in 1982, will feature more than 70 nations and territories mainly from the former British empire.

The 12-day sporting extravaganza is being billed as the most expensive Commonwealth Games in history with an infrastructure and organising budget of two billion dollars.

The Commonwealth Games Federation warned India again earlier this month over the slow progress in getting ready for the event, saying "there remains much to be done" ahead of the sporting extravaganza.

Five Saddest Child-Star Stories

Dana Plato, Gary Coleman NBC

[Editor's Note: This story originally ran on May 13, after the suicide of Dana Plato's son. In light of Gary Coleman's death on Friday, and all the renewed talk of the so-called Diff'rent Strokes Curse, we thought it was worth revisiting.]

Tyler Lambert wasn't a child star, but his suicide feels like a coda to mother Dana Plato's, whose own death made for one of Hollywood's saddest child-star stories.

Note: one of.

From Judy Garland's studio-prescribed pills to Michael Jackson's lost childhood to River Phoenix's last night out, child-star mythology is dominated by terrible tales. Here are five defining ones:

Gary Coleman's Punch: In 1998, Plato's Diff'rent Strokes costar, once the highest-paid of child actors, was making a living as a security guard, when an autograph encounter led to his arrest for assault and battery. The reputed trigger for Coleman's fist? The ultimate taunt for the ultimate former child star: "That's why you didn't make it as a successful actor as an adult."

Bobby Driscoll's Lonely Death: A Disney golden boy of the 1940s and 1950s (he's the voice of Peter Pan in Peter Pan), the thirtysomething Driscoll was found dead in 1968 by children playing in an abandoned New York City apartment building. With no I.D. on him, and with no one recognizing him, the onetime star turned heroin addict was buried as John Doe. It would be nearly two years before his parents, and the world, learned of his fate.

Danny Bonaduce's Wake-Up Call: One day in 1974, the then-Partridge Family smart aleck and his mother drove to the set. The studio guard stopped their car at the gate. The child star was about to become a former child star in brutally classic fashion. "Hey, man," the guard told him, per Bonaduce's recounting to CMonGetHappy.com, "the Partridge Family doesn't live here anymore." And that was that.

Corey Haim's Unshocking Death: Last month's autopsy results on the 38-year-old star of Lucas and The Lost Boys acquitted drugs. Like Driscoll before him, Haim succumbed to natural causes, natural causes that felt all too natural given the nearly 20 years of professional and personal troubles that preceded his passing.

Dana Plato's Arrest: By 1991, it'd been a long time since anyone had predicted that TV's Kimberly Drummond was bound to become the next Elizabeth Taylor (as writer-actor Ben Stein once did). Her application for a $6-an-hour job at her Las Vegas apartment complex denied, Plato armed herself with a pellet gun and robbed a strip-mall video store of $164. Her subsequent arrest, coupled with those of costar Todd Bridges and tied to Coleman's then-legal wrangling with his parents, made the Diff'rent Strokes trio emblematic of everything, rightly or wrongly, we think former child stardom is about.

Legendary Actor Dennis Hopper Dies at Age 74

Dennis Hopper AP Photo/ Evan Agostini

Dennis Hopper was no Easy Rider.

Hopper, the actor who upended Hollywood with his hippie classic, lost chunks of his career to hard-headedness and drugs, and wound up a revered elder statesman, died Saturday, May 29 at his home in Venice after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer. He was 74, and on seemingly on his ninth, if not tenth, life.

Unpredictable to the end, Hopper filed for divorce from his fifth wife, Victoria, while undergoing chemotherapy.

"I've reinvented myself so many times," he once said.

Twice nominated for an Oscar, Hopper came up with his greatest creation when he and Peter Fonda decided to make "a Western, only on motorcycles."

Easy Rider saw Hopper and Fonda mount up as drug dealers Billy and Wyatt, with Jack Nicholson, in his breakthrough role, as their straight man. The movie's last line--"We blew it"--became as iconic as its meaning was debated.

Produced for less than $500,000, a bare-bones budget even for 1969, the film was a worldwide sensation, marking the moment when old Technicolor Hollywood faded.

"It did change people's minds about films in Hollywood," Hopper told Charlie Rose in 1994. "Independent films started to be made."

Born May 17, 1936, in Kansas, the future Hollywood rebel was a product of the studio system, breaking into the movies as a teenager, with roles in the James Dean classics, Rebel Without a Cause and Giant. On the whole, there wasn't much in Hopper's early credits--heavy on sitcoms and Westerns--to suggest a counterculture icon in the making. (His attitude, however, had been frowned upon by the establishment since the 1950s.)

By his early 30s, as "Don't trust anyone over 30" became a mantra, Hopper let his hair out in youth exploitation flicks such as The Trip, which also costarred Fonda. Easy Rider, released in 1969, was to be Fonda and Hopper's farewell to the biker movie. And it was. And so much more.

"I didn't think it was going to be able to be stopped. I felt that from the beginning, man, I never had any question about it," Hopper told DGA Magazine in 2003.

Easy Rider earned two Academy Award nominations, including a shared screenplay nod for Hopper, Fonda and Terry Southern.

If Easy Rider was a rocket ride, so was Hopper's life after the movie--a one-way, drug-fueled descent. In 1970, his marriage to The Mamas & the Papas singer Michelle Phillips lasted eight days. In 1971, his newly hot directing career flamed out with the barely released The Last Movie. An appearance in 1979's Apocalypse Now was a rare highlight from the decade.

In the 1980s, Hopper sobered up, and work picked up. In one stretch, he appeared in River's Edge, Blue Velvet and Hoosiers, in the latter earning a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for playing an alcoholic father.

"I thought I'd be dead before I was 30," Hopper told Time magazine in 1986. "Turning 40 stunned me. Fifty is a major miracle, and I think I may even make 70."

Hopper did make 70. In later years, he pursued art and photography, even while being regularly called on by Hollywood to lend a little unhinged cred to a project. Latter-day screen credits included Speed, a stint on 24 and the Starz series, Crash.

Survivors of the '60s who still recognized Hopper as Easy Rider's Billy might have been surprised to see the star pitching retirement planning in commercials for Ameriprise, or to learn the man was a George W. Bush Republican (who went on to back Barack Obama).

But then, Hopper specialized in surprises almost as much as reinvention. In March 2010, a day after his lawyer said the actor was dying and beyond cancer treatment, Hopper attended the unveiling of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He looked weak, his head and a hand sported bandages, but he was there.

"Everything I've learned in my life I learned from you and the wonderful world that I traveled and saw," a sentimental Hopper said, per a local wire service. "...This has been my home and my school. And I love all of you. I just want to thank you. This means so much to me, and thank you very much, everyone."
